El Salvador scuba diving and snorkeling
One of the area's best kept secrets: Diving and Snorkeling! Just imagine exploring shipwrecks from the 19th century, coral reefs, strange rock formations... or perhaps a crater lake? And all this without emptying your bank account! El Salvador's geographic location makes it a perfect spot for this, with clear blue skies, white sandy beaches and warm ocean waters... the perfect ingredients for an awesome adventure.
El Salvador scuba diving... Open Waters
Los Cóbanos: One of El Salvador's best scuba diving spots is on the west side of the country. In Sonsonate is a small fishing community named Los Cóbanos, located in the calm-water cove Cabo Punta Remedios. Here lies the most amazing bio-diverse habitat, so much so, that it has been declared El Salvador's first Natural Marine Protected area!
So be sure to bring your diving gear because there are some great sights to see here. El Salvador scuba diving tour companies offer day trips (during October-May, the dry season) to this beautiful, ecologically-rich area, and prepare you for a day full of adventure in the open waters and also offer lessons and certification for those who are interested. This is definitely a must do for deep water lovers!
El Salvador scuba diving... Crater Lakes
Ilopango and Coatepeque crater lakes: Lake Ilopango is about 15 km east from San Salvador and is the largest lake in El Salvador covering an area of about 72sq km and about 230m deep. Created by a volcanic eruption, it has a rocky and edgy topography, and its great cliffs and walls make it an amazing adventure.
Ilopango has several islands that are home to native birds and a sanctuary to migrating ones. The water temperature is around 26Cº (77Fº) and up through out the year which makes scuba diving a great activity any time of the year. This lake can also be seen from the El Boquerón National Park which is about 30 - 40 minutes from San Salvador.
Lake Coatepeque was also created by a volcanic eruption and covers an area of about 26sq km and is 120m deep. It is surrounded by stunning green slopes and encircled by Cerro Verde and the Santa Ana and Izalco volcanoes. In the native Nahuatl language Coatepeque means Hill of Snakes.Coatepeque lake can be seen from a lookout point in Cerro Verde National Park, it's a stunning sight! El Salvador scuba diving in these crater lakes is becoming very popular. Here you can dive and discover the creatures that call these places home. Most diving companies offer diving trips here and some will even take you for night trips so you can experience the tranquility and quietness of the night in the underwater world - and you will even be able to see the fish asleep! Ilopango and Coatepeque lakes are such a beautiful area, with rich eco-systems. At Ilopango lake there's a great view of the stunning twin-peaks Chinchontepec volcano as seen in the picture above. Snorkeling in El Salvador
Snorkeling is another great way to explore the rich eco-system in Los Cóbanos and have a great time. This is great for exploring the rock formations, it's really stunning to see abundant marine life like corals, invertebrate creatures and so much more. Those who want to snorkel in deeper waters, there's much to discover as well.
As you can see, there's a lot to see and do here in Los Cóbanos. This is not an fully developed area as La Libertad may be, but it still has its idiosyncrasies that make this place so unique. So if you love the underwater world, bring your gear and give snorkeling in El Salvador a try, I know you will not be disappointed.
I'm not a diver myself, but I sure do enjoy walking around, exploring the rock formations along the beach, hunting for shells and other little sea treasures!
