El Salvador as well as other great little places to shop at.

El Salvador news headlines

The Cup of Excellence 2009 award winner: El Salvador's 2009 Cup of Excellence was awarded to El Topacio farms. It was a tough competion with all the best coffees from El Salvador competing for the cup. The award winning coffee farm is located in Juayua in Sonsonate; be sure to ask for El Topacio coffee when visiting Sonsonate.

Swine Flu: With the current global swine flu situation, all travellers should be on the alert and take the proper precautions. There have been 2 confirmed cases of AH1N1 in El Salvador; it is believed the first person contracted the virus while in Mexico and then infected another person he came in contact with. These 2 persons are under quarantine in their homes.

There have been no other confirmed cases but authorities have declared a national emergency to ensure everything is done to prevent the spread of the virus.

Livingston Airlines: As announced back in October of 2008, Livingston Airlines reopened the direct connection Milan/San Salvador as of March 2009. And partnering with the carrier TACA will allow Livingston to also add other convenient connections to other airports in the Central America region.

In May

The month of May in El Salvador is quite nice. It marks the beginning of the rainy season so this is the time when the weather starts to cool down a little. With the beginning of the rains, the abundance of tropical fruits also takes place. This is the season for large, tasty avocados, a variety of mangoes, cashew fruit (marañones) and so on.

The beaches are also great for visiting. The rains have just started so the waves are still good and will see some surfers hitting the waves. By now, everyone is back to routine after the Easter break so the beaches and other tourist attractions, like the Los Tercios waterfalls in Suchitoto, are not as crowded as they were just a few weeks ago.

Featured Hot Spot

Suchitoto is located to the south east of San Salvador. A town heavily damaged during the civil war. It is now a flourishing colonial town where you can feel like you are stepping back in time.

There is so much to do in Suchitoto, not just walking around on the cobble stone roads admiring the colonial architecture. You can visit the historic center where the local church is located but if you are interested in other outdoor activities, then you must visit the Los Tercios waterfall which is just 1.5k from the city center – be sure to visit between May and December though when the waters are running. The boat trips on Lake Suchitlán are also awesome, or maybe go horseback riding around the Guazapa volcano.

There is so much to see and do in this beautiful little town, so you may need more than one day to cover all the great spots. If you are looking for a place to stay, La Bermuda 1525 Hotel, is a great and affordable little place to spend the night.

Coming soon

On our next issue of El Salvador Adventures... we'll be featuring La Costa del Sol as the hot spot to visit!
