I will talk a little bit about Salvadorean food here so you get an idea of what to expect when you get there.

Salvadoreans are very fortunate to be able to enjoy different styles of food. In El Salvador you can find fast food, international cuisine as well as the very delicious local dishes. From fresh tropical fruits to catch of the day seafood, you can try so much!

El Salvador is (and I will dare say) world-famous for its pupusas. Pupusas are tortillas with either a meat filling or a combination of meat, cheese and red beans filling served with a pickled cabbage salad and fresh tomato sauce; but I can tell you, they are super delicious.

I recommend that you do not leave El Salvador without giving pupusas a try, you'll love them!

And the good thing is that when you go back home, chances are you may be able to find a Salvadorean restaurant near you that sells them. If there are Salvadoreans living in your city, there are pupusas!

Nuegados de Masa Some of the other delicious food of El Salvador are tamales, sopa de mondongo, nuegados con chilate (pictured here).

Or how about some empanadas with a cup of coffee or maybe a delicious clam cocktail?

Don't worry, I know these names may sound a little strange and unknown, but later on, I'll explain what they are and even give you some recipes that you can try at home.

The food of El Salvador is so good and delicious, but yes, I have to say that many things are fried or deep fried, so we have to be a little careful to not eat too much.

Zapotes

I remember growing up in El Salvador, there was hardly any junk food for us to snack on.

Our snacks were basically fresh fruits like mangos, papayas, watermelons, jícamas, and other less known ones like zapotes (pictured on the left), anonas, jocotes...

Umm, all so good and delicious, just thinking about it makes my mouth water! So when you are there, be sure to try these healthy and delicious tropical fruits.

Marañones, Cashew fruit

I'm sure you've tried cashew nuts before, right? But have you ever tried the cashew fruit? You can try it in El Salvador and you can also try fresh cashew fruit juice! It's delicious! Here is a picture of them and yes, they do grow upside down.

Oh, and when you are the beach, be sure to have some coconut water too - straight from the coconut!

Try them at home and enjoy!

We have our own favourite dishes too... but I want to give YOU the chance to tell the world about YOUR favourite Salvadorian food!
