Central America Culture and great Central America travel tips
Central America culture is rich but it is different than other cultures of the world.
Not knowing the basic differences between other cultures and Central American culture can definitely put a damper on your travelling experience. We’d like to share with you some excellent Central America travel tips to keep in mind when travelling to any country in Central America. Of course, the culture of all Central American countries is not exactly the same but they are very similar. So this will give you a general idea of what to expect and what to keep in mind about the Central America culture.
Tipping and Gratuities
In many other countries, proper tipping etiquette is 15% to 20% and is always expected. However, many Central American restaurants and hotels automatically add a service charge to the bill. In this case, tipping isn’t necessary like it would be in other countries. So our recommendation is to always check your bill to see if something along the lines of a service charge was included. But even if it is already on your tab, you can still choose to tip the staff for their hard work in accommodating you. For instance, if you want to express your satisfaction at the quality service at one of Veneto's Panama Hotels (a Hotel and Casino in Panama), then you can leave a tip. The staff will will certainly appreciate it. This is also the case in El Salvador; however, smaller restaurants and hotels will not automatically add a gratuity to the bill. These ones depend entirely on the generosity of their guests.
Personal Space The Central America culture about personal space is similar to that of South America as well. Latin Americans have a much smaller sense of personal space. So don’t be surprised if locals to talk to you from a closer distance than what you may be used. What to do in this situation? Just keep your cool and make sure you don’t step away (maybe you can do it very slowly and discretely), as that can be seen by some as very “unfriendly". First-time greetings may also be less formal and more relaxed and casual. Central Americans may talk more loudly, make more exaggerated movements with their bodies, and casually touch you more when talking. I am guilty of that myself, but this is a very rooted aspect of the Central America culture. Hopefully this will not make you too uncomfortable as it does not make the locals uncomfortable at all; it just makes the conversation more animated! FriendlinessIt is part of the Central America culture to be very friendly and warm to people even those we have just met. We are interested in talking to you about your family and getting to know you personally. I’ve heard that even before business meetings, Central Americans like to have a significant amount of personal conversation before starting the meeting. Don’t be surprised for example if people start asking you about your life and where you come from. So you can also take advantage of this and ask the local questions about their culture, history and family, they will love it and you will make new friends. PromptnessCentral Americans generally have a more relaxed attitude about time as life seems to be a little slower here. So arriving to an appointment around 30 minutes late isn’t as inappropriate as you might imagine. Of course this does not apply to all situations but it sure would not be a big deal if you arrived a little late for your lunch date. Some Central Americans refer to this custom as “Latin time” as opposed to “English time”. “English time” would refer to being on time for your appointment and “Latin time” refers to being a little late! The Central American culture says being a little late is OK but I know this is not seen with good eyes by some people so it is up to you! You can just do what you feel comfortable with, either way it’s OK! There’s so much to talk about the Central America culture, but I think we’ve covered the basics. These Central America travel tips will sure help you with your travel experience and make it more enjoyable. Do you have your OWN Central America travel tips that you would like to share with us?
