I have received lots of requests for names of famous poets, writers and other important people from El Salvador so I've worked on a few that I remember from school.

I hope you enjoy their short biographies and excerpts from their work!

El Salvador People - Poets and Writers:

Claudia Lars, El Salvador poet Claudia Lars: Was born as Margarita del Carmen Brannon Vega in 1899 to her father of Irish descent and her mother of Salvadorean descent.

At the age of 20 she published he first poetry book and over the years became one of the most well respected poets in Latin America.

Some of her works include Estrellas en el Pozo (1934), Fabula de una Verdad (1959), Sonetos (1947) and Poesía Última (1972).

Here is a short excerpt from her "Sonetos de Arcangel":

¡Amor, pequeño amor, amor gigante!
Gusanillo de luz y sol de Enero
Playa de siglos, clima del instante,
ancla fija en el golfo marinero.

Almena sobre rumbos del levanteEspejo que refleja la distante
línea de lo perfecto y verdadero.

Por tí, devotamente, a toda hora,
alza mi ensueño su celeste llama
y se humilla la carne pecadora.

Para seguir tus huestes he nacido:
¡Símbolo eterno que mi voz proclama,
Alado capitán jamás vencido!

Hugo Lindo, El Salvador Poet Hugo Lindo: He was born in La Unión in 1917 and was a Diplomat, Lawyer, Novelist and Poet as well as Dean of the Faculty of Culture and Fine Arts at the university José Simeón Cañas.

Some of his works include Navegante Río (1962), Guaro y Champaña (1947), Justicia Señor Governador (1960), Aquí Se Cuentan Cuentos (children’s stories 1959) and Yo Soy La Memoria (1985).

Here is an excerpt from his "Fácil Palabra" poem:

Nunca hubo palabra

El Salvador People - Arts:

Fernando Llort, El Salvador artist Fernando Llort: He was born in
San Salvador in 1949 and has been dubbed as “El Salvador’s National Artist”.

When he chose the town of La Palma as his home, he introduced the local people to his very unique and beautiful art style known as Naif.

Most of his paintings, depict images of simple life among which agriculture, animals, flowers and adobe houses with red tile roofs stand out.

Thanks to Fernando Llort, La Palma is became an artistic yet rustic town and is now part of the Artisan’s Tour in El Salvador.

Pancho Lara: Francisco Antonio Lara Hernandez, known as Pancho Lara was born in 1900 in Santa Ana to his parents Captain Jeremías Lara and Angela Hernandez.

Pancho Lara started composing his own little songs and learned to read music on his own and he got good at playing the guitar, piano, and marimba.

One of his landmark compositions is El Carbonero which has become representative of El Salvador and is often referred to as the 2nd national anthem.

Take a look at this short video of El Carbonero is being performed by a folk dance group.

The song El Carbonero is the story of a "campesino" who comes to town to sell charcoal he picked up from the volcano. The story is very representative of the El Salvador people of the early 1900's.

El Carbonero is one of my favourite folk songs of all time. I remember this song being performed at school functions with folk dance.

There are so many more El Salvador people who have made invaluable contributions to the culture of El Salvador, but it is simply impossible to mention them all.

Please feel free to tell me about your favourtite poet, writer or artist from El Salvador. Simply click here and fill out the form.
