Embassy of El Salvador and
entry requirements

The embassy of El Salvador is the best place to find out what documents are required for travelling there.

Entry requirements for El Salvador are not difficult, but it is always a good rule of thumb to check what may apply to you before leaving home.

Of course, being Salvadorians, we do not need a visa or tourist card to enter El Salvador, but we’ve done a little bit of research so that we can give you an idea of what you will need depending on your country of citizenship.

The main required documents for entry into El Salvador are:

  • Valid passport
  • Visa
  • Tourist card
  • Proof of citizenship if CA-4 (Border Control Agreement) applies to you

Requirements for Central Americans

Citizens of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua do not need either a visa or a tourist card.

Thanks to the CA-4 agreement, citizens of these 4 Central American countries are able to travel within each other without the need for a visa or tourist card.

Only proof of citizenship is needed at border crossings and at the airports.

El Salvador Tourist card requirements

The embassy of El Salvador lists the following countries as only needing a tourist card to visit El Salvador:

  • Canada
  • Greece
  • Malaysia
  • Mexico
  • Portugal
  • Singapore
  • United States of America
  • Taiwan (needed only with ordinary passport)

For citizens of the countries above, you may obtain the tourist card at any entry point into El Salvador, whether it’s Comalapa International Airport or land borders. The El Salvador tourist card may also be bought at the travel agency where you book your flight.

The cost for the tourist card is US $10.00 and it must be paid at the time the card is obtained.

Keep in mind that if you decide to get it at the airport, you must pay with cash, so make sure you have enough on hand. Tourist cards are valid for 90 days from the issue date.

Visa El Salvador requirements

If you require a visa to enter El Salvador, an application may be obtained at the embassy of El Salvador in United States for US citizens.

The process does not take very long and the website has information in greater detail and also addresses of the El Salvador consulates in the US.

The cost for applying for a visa is US $30.00 and it must be paid at the time of application and it’s valid for 90 days.

For more information on where to find an embassy of El Salvador or a consulate near you or for visa El Salvador information, this El Salvador information website has great info, just enter your country of citizenship.
