Suchitoto El Salvador - rich in art & culture

Suchitoto El Salvador is a beautiful colonial town that has made a great come back after the years of the civil war.

Suchitoto is rich in art and culture and so it became a destination town for the Artisan Tour.

You really need to take a couple of days here to really explore the "urban" and country side of Suchitoto, you'll be amazed at what you find and see... I know I was!

I love the cobble stone streets and colonial architecture. At first glance, it may seem like time has stopped here but...

Once you start walking around and visiting places, you realize that this is not the case.

What to do in Suchitoto El Salvador

  • Walking - You can easily stroll down the cobble stone streets on a sunny day and just hang out and relax
  • Craft Shops - There are many shops that sell crafts and souvenirs. You'll also find many eateries and internet cafes if you want to go online
  • Tours - The Tourist Information office offers tours with local guides. They can help you to explore the less known areas of Suchitoto
  • Festivals - The Festival of Art & Culture is held in Suchitoto every year in the Las Ruinas Theater
  • Museums - The Museum of National Works of Art is also in Las Ruinas Theater on 2nd Calle Oriente & Calle San Rafael. Admission is $1.50
  • The Museum Home of Alejandro Coto with a great historic collection of paintings and books. It's located on Barrio Concepción, admission is $4.00 and $1.00 for children
  • Art Galleries - Pascal Gallery on 4th Calle Poniente, Shanay Gallery on 3rd Ave. Norte, Casa del Escultor where you can admire beautiful sculptures by Salvadorean artists
  • Suchitlán Lake - This is a beautiful lake that was formed with the building of the Cerrón Verde Dam. You can rest, relax any way you want here.

    The boat trips around the lake are very popular but it is also great for kayaking

  • Suchitoto El Salvador - Los Tercios Cascadas
  • Cascada Los Tercios - This waterfall is about 2km from Suchitoto and it is a real natural beauty.

    It seems like the rocks have been carefully placed by someone, but it's all natural. The waterfall drops about 30m, you just really have to see this place, it's amazing!

    The best place to visit the Los Tercios waterfall is between May and October (the rainy season), the waters have a stronger current


Where to Stay

There are several options for staying in Suchitoto El Salvador and it all depends on how much or how little you want to spend.

There are so many different places to eat as well, it all depends on what kind of food you are looking for, so make sure you look around.

Suchitoto El Salvador is a beautiful town that really deserves to be included in the Artisan Tour (Ruta Artesanal). And this is a place where both tourists and locals alike keep coming back to.

Other destination towns included in the Artisan Tour are San Sebastian, Ilobasco and La Palma. Be sure to check them out!
