You know, El Salvador is one of Central America’s favourite vacation spot and now that Lonely Planet has voted El Salvador as one of the top 10 countries to visit in 2010 I bet you it will become even more popular.

I think our favourite attractions are the beaches, there are so many of them. What is YOUR favourite attraction in El Salvador – the beaches, hiking trails? Tell us about it!!

I wanted to write about our favourite tourist attractions in El Salvador, but it’s so hard to choose just a few, there are so many great places we like.

Los Planes de Renderos

One of the places we always visit is the Lookout at Los Planes de Renderos or “Los Planes” as we all call it.

Planes de Renderos El Salvador

What is really awesome about this lookout point is that it is at such altitude that from different corners of it you can actually see the Ilopango Lake, the San Jacinto Mountain, the suburb of San Marcos and the south part of San Salvador.

The climate here is nice, cooler than other parts of the city – so that’s a bonus!

We like going on weekends because they usually have folk dances and some type of exhibitions going on, so there’s more to see and do than just the lookout.

Oh, and another great thing is staying later in the afternoon after sunset and seeing San Salvador come alive with all the lights as you can see in the picture above.

But I have to confess, the lookouts are not my favourite thing to do in Los Planes. My very favourite thing is eating at one of the “pupuserias”.

Los Planes de Renderos is renowned for serving some of the best pupusas in the country. I love the cheese with lorocos pupusas… it’s just the best!

If you ever get a chance to go to Los Planes, be sure to make time to try these delicious goodies!

La Puerta del Diablo

Puerta del Diablo El Salvador Los Planes de Renderos is only about 6km from La Puerta del Diablo, another great attraction. We like going to Puerta del Diablo to see the sights.

At an altitude of 1250m above sea level, this area offers excellent sights of the Pacific Coastline, the village of Panchimalco.

Panchimalco is an indigenous village where you can still find people walking around in their native dress – it’s pretty cool.

From La Puerta del Diablo we also got a great angle of the Ilopango Lake and you can even see San Vicente’s twin peaked Chinchontepeq volcano.

I haven’t gotten the courage to try it yet, but La Puerta del Diablo is also very popular for rapelling down the cliff.

It usually gets pretty busy on weekends when lots of people come looking for a great adrenaline rush!

I am a little (OK, a lot) afraid of heights so I haven’t mustered up the courage to try the zip lines yet, but it sure sounds like the people doing it are having a lot of fun.

The rappelling and zip lines have been set up by the Salvadorian Federation of Mountain Climbing, so it is regulated and well maintained.

El Boquerón National Park

El Boquerón National Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in El Salvador. You can spend an awesome afternoon here with your friends or family.

El Boqueron Park El Salvador

One thing I really like is that it is well kept and maintained not to mention the security that is seen around the park and along the highway.

We saw a several police cars patrolling the area – so that helps to make you feel safer and more relaxed!

The lookout points are also easy to get to where you can see the crater of the volcano.

We hiked the trails around the park and let me tell you that there are so many orchids and other exotic plants around, it’s just beautiful. Some people also hike down to the crater with a guide – pretty cool!

These are just some of our favourite tourist attractions in El Salvador. But there are so many other places to visit and stuff to do.

So what attractions in El Salvador have you visited? Share your favourite spot with us and other readers of this page!
